Amirthi Zoological Park

Places near Vellore

Amirthi zoological park, started in 1967, is situated at the base of Javadi Hills. It is a sought after tourist spot. It spreads across 25 hectares with waterfall, swings and park for children to play.

Various species of birds and animals can be found here. Animals and Birds in Amirthi Zoological Park include spotted deer, wild cat, hedge dog, eagle, fox, duck, Rhesus monkey, pigeon, red-headed parrot, love birds, wild parrot, rabbit, tortoise, python, crocodile, peacock, mongoose etc.

Not only this, trees and plants with medicinal significance too have been grown in Amirthi zoological park. Two rest houses have been constructed for guests along with meditation hall for experiencing serenity of the place in its true sense!

How to Reach Amirthi Zoological Park

The zoo is just 25 kms. from Vellore and you can reach here in half an hour! Worth the visit. Just drive to the zoo with your family or board a bus to this place.


Tourist Places near Vllore

Kanchipuram is a 'temple city' which reflects the traditions and culture of Tamil Nadu vividly. Here, you should visit Vedantangal Birds Sanctuary (48 Kms. from Kanchipuram). Look forward for birds such as Cormorants, Flamingos, Pelicans, moor hens, Storks, Darter and Egrets!

For the spiritually inclined, there is Kailasanatha Temple, Kamakshi Amman Temple, Ekambareshvara Temple, Shri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham, Thennangur Panduranga Temple, Varadharaja Perumal Temple, Ekambaranatha Temple, Kachapeshwarar Temple, Varatha raja perumal temple ... that's a long list and there are many more temples here! How to Reach Kanchipuram from Vellore

The distance between Vellore and Kanchipuram is 63 kms. take your own car or board a bus to your destination. Many tourist locations here!                        


How about visiting Tirumala Venkateshwara temple? Also visit Kailasanathakona waterfalls, Talakona Waterfalls, Chandragiri Fort, Sri Venkateswara Zoological Park, Regional Science Centre and Kapilatheertham. There are more temples here too but some can be visited when you come here again!

How to Reach Karvetinagar

If you are keen to enjoy visiting dams, picnic spots and museums in Karvetinagar, just board an interstate bus and head for this place. Just an hour's distance by bus or car as distance between Vellore and Karvetinagar is 40 kms.


Kodaikanal near Vellore

This is a beautiful city with myriad tourist attractions for you! Enjoy tranquility near Kodaicanal lake, Berijam lake, Kodaikanal Golf Course. Also visit Solar Observatory, Palni hills. Rest a while, enjoy some shopping and get gifts for your friends as a proof of your hectic but enjoyable visit to all these places!

How to Reach Kodaikanal from Vellore

This is no mean distance from Vellore! But where there is a will, there is a way too! kodaikanal is 490 kms. from Vellore. Take a train to Kodaikanal or Bus from Vellore Fort bus stop. By car, it will take you about 5 hours to reach here.

Javadi Hills

Jamanamarathur is a famous village in Javadi hills (also known as Javadhu hills). It is known for its numerous sandalwood and fruit trees. Indian astronomer Vainu Bappu selected these hills as the site for construction of  Kavalur Observatory. Tamarind, jack fruit, pomegranate, mango, lemon, coconut, guava, plantain, Paddy,Saamai, castor oil plant are also found here. Akin to visiting an Ayurvedic centre! But you know how medically useful these trees are!

How to Reach Javadi hills from Vellore

Javadi hills are about 72 kms. from Vellore. By bus or car it should take you 1 hour 15 minutes to reach here.

Jalagampaari Fall

Waterfalls Near Vellore

Jalagampaari Fall is  just 17 kms away from  Tirupattur. You can bask in the beauty of waterfalls and also visit Murugan temple nearby. Here, the deity in the temple is believed to be present in the form of 'Vel' or spear.

How to Reach Jalagampaari waterfalls

From Vellore Fort bus stop to Jalagampaari waterfalls, the distance is just 1 km. That's near really! Take an auto, cab or a bus to reach here. Auto will not charge you more than 50 rupees. Travelling by bus will be far cheaper.

Elagiri Hills

An ideal location for a weekend holiday! What a beautiful picnic spot surrounded by green cover of nature and pleasant air! Visit Murugan temple here, enjoy trekking or just sit and relax. You will be happy and elevated in spirits for sure!

How to Reach Elagiri Hills

The distance between Vellore and Elagiri hills is 66 kms. It will take at least one hour for you to reach Elagiri by bus or car.



This is a significant Shaivite town. The 'lingam' is huge with intricate carvings on the pillars of the temple. During the month of November or Karthigai, Deepam festival is celebrated in the temple which attracts many tourists from far and near.

How to Reach Thiruvannamalai

The minimum time taken by a train to reach Thiruvannamalai from Vellore is 1 1/2 hours.There are no flights between the two cities. Cheapest and best way to reach Thiruvannamalai is to take a train. The distance between Vellore and Thiruvannamalai is 85 kms.


Tourist Attractions near Vellore

Tiruppattur, located in Vellore district, is an old town which is now a hub of mills and many small scale industries. The 'sandalwood town' has a large number of sandal trees. The Yelagiri hills are nearby. There are temples here which are really old and are dedicated to deities Shiva and Vishnu. Who would not like to visit the 100 years old municipal market with more than 400 shops doing brisk business every day? The Big Tank and Small Tank were constructed during the reign of Hoysala Dynasty.

How to Reach Tiruppattur

Most of the buses are operated by TNSTC (The Tamil Nadu state Bus transport corporation) NH-46 passes through outskirts of Tiruppattur. There are frequent buses to various neighbouring towns. Commuting has become less cumbersome due to A/C buses plying between cities. Some of these Volvo and luxury A/C buses are being operated by TNSTC.

Tirupattur Railway Station comes under Southern Railway Station. The station is just 2 kms. distance from the bus stand.Jolarpet Junction lies 8 kms. away.
