The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in CMC, Vellore serves and treats patients requiring such therapy. Here, there is a brain injury clinic, physiotherapy centre to assist people in walking and sitting without pain, Prosthetics (artificial limbs and arms) and Orthotics (walking sticks, splints, calipers and shoes etc.) For patients needing speech therapy, professional therapists are available to tackle problems of swallowing and speaking clearly.

Rehabilitation involves training patients so that they can have a means of livelihood or opt for a job when they get alright. Both children and adults with disabilities are rehabilitated here. Some are rendered disabled due to accident, stroke, arthritis, brain injury, amputation, cerebral palsy or paralysis while some are born with physical defects. For instance, a man who suffered a stroke of paralysis learns to write under professional supervision and another person learns to sit down with his artificial limb.

Occupational Therapy is available in following centres of CMC, Vellore:

  • Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) ward in CMC (founded by Dr. Mary Verghese). The Rehabilitation Institute celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 1991.

  • Nambikkai Nilayam Centre (children with learning difficulties)
  • Community Hospital and Development outreach and Outpatient Occupational Therapy (OT) department.

Variety of equipment are available for assessment and therapeutic activities. which include modified chairs, gym balls etc. This department is now working in collaboration with WHO (World Health Organization) and is now a World Health Organization Collaborating Center for prevention of disability, capacity building and rehabilitation technology.

CBR programme (Community Based Rehabilitation programme) also receives the co-operation of WHO. It intends to improve the quality of life of patients with disabilities, educate and empower the patients and their families with the help of experts and trained volunteers.

Dr. Paul Brand Centre

This is a specialized centre for Hand surgery, Leprosy Reconstructive Surgery and peripheral nerve surgery (HLRS Unit). This centre has the coveted distinction of being one of the oldest units in Asia in the field of hand reconstruction, hand therapy and rehabilitation. Reconstruction of deformed hands, faces and feet of leprosy patients, re-implantation of hand and digits and other such surgeries are performed here. Other problems pertaining to hands and peripheral nerve dysfunctions are performed here and Reparative, Reconstructive and Replacement surgery is carried out by specialists in this field along with hand therapy.

Dr. Paul W Brand, who was himself a pioneer in this field of surgery, founded this centre way back in 1951. Post Graduate doctors are also trained in various related fields of orthopedic surgery and plastic surgery. Hand physiotherapy technical personnel too receive training here.
