Founder of CMC, Vellore

The founder of CMC, Vellore was Dr. Ida S. Scudder, an American  physician, who brought health care and research to this small fort city in 1900. The Government of India issued a commemorative stamp on 12th August, 2000 in her honour. The motto of the hospital, given by its founder Dr.Ida Scudder, is this: 'Not to be ministered unto but to minister' (based on Matthew 20:28) --- King James Version (KJV).

Dr.Sunil Chandy is the present Director of CMC, Vellore. Well wishers and patients who were treated in CMC have joined together to form 'Friends of Vellore Organization'.

Faith of patients, the underlying motto of service, specialization and expertise of doctors and paramedical staff go a long way to make CMC, Vellore a sought after treatment centre. CMC, Vellore: Achievements

There are  67 wards, 92 clinics each day, 39 major operation theatres and 18 minor ones and 121 departments or units in this hospital. The hospital has the credit of being the first in India in various disciplines. To mention a few of them --- establishing India's first college of nursing (1946), first reconstructive surgery on leprosy patients (1948), first Neurological Sciences Department in South Asia (1948),first Open Heart Surgery (1961), first Middle-ear Microsurgery (1961), first Rehabilitation Institute (1966), first Kidney Transplant (1971), first Bone Marrow Transplant (1986), first carotid bifurcation stenting procedure (1996), first trans-septal carotid stenting procedure in the world (1996), first trans-jugular mitral valvuloplasty procedure in the world (1996) and first ABO Incompatible Renal Transplant in India (2009).

Peripheral Facilities in CMC, Vellore

The Public Relation Department is at the entrance of the main hospital building. They help you in finding accommodation or any other help you may require. A booklet 'A Guide to the Christian Medical College, Vellore' is also available at the main reception. It guides you about how to get appointment, location of various departments, banks and ATMs around the campus etc.

There are two main campuses --- the main campus is in the heart of Vellore city and the other is in Bagayam, 7 kms. from the main campus.

Out-Patient or OP Block

There is a help desk right in the Vellore station to assist the patients who come from faraway places. At the OPD reception too, there are volunteers for guidance. There are 'May I help you' desks at various places as well as the social worker in the OPD.

The Centenary Block

This Block is also called Ida Sophia Scudder Centenary Centre - ISSCC For Women & Children. All facilities related to treatment of women and children under various departments, are provided here. These include out-patient clinics, in-patient beds, operation theatres and surgical beds pertaining to Paediatric Surgery, Obstetrics, Reproductive medicine, Neonatology, Child Health and Developmental Paediatrics departments. This Centenary Block is on the main hospital campus, behind OPD Block (where out-patients are seen).

How to Reach CMC, Vellore

By Train

Patients reach here by train as there is no commercial airport in Vellore. Chennai Airport is the nearest international airport. If you have boarded a Broad gauge train, you should get off at Katpadi Junction. CMC, Vellore is 10 kms. from here and you can hire a taxi or an auto to reach the hospital. Taxi will charge you INR 150, auto will charge you INR 40 and cycle rickshaw will charge INR 30.

The hospital is just half a kilometre from the main bus stand. So, you can also board on Number 1 and Number 2 Town buses from Katpadi Railway station and reach the main hospital. These buses also go to Bagayam campus where CMC Shell Eye hospital and Mental Health Institute ate located.

If you are travelling by meter gauge train (Villupuram-Tirupathi Line), you should get off at Vellore Cantonment station which is only 1.6 kms. from the main hospital campus.

By Bus

Some patients reach Chennai and ten board a bus for Vellore from New Bus Stand in Koyambedu. Many buses are available every 20 minutes and it takes 3-4 hours to reach Vellore. If you take a cab straight to Vellore from Chennai Airport, it will cost you INR 1500 and will be a 4 hours journey to Vellore.

Community Programmes by CMC

Department of Community Health, established in 1957, organises various community health programmes by CMC. These community health programmes include:

• Community Health And Development (CHAD) which serves in collaboration with a Community Hospital in Bagayam.

• Rural Unit for Health and Social Affairs (RUHSA) --- located in KV Kuppam Block, 25 kms. from Vellore and a 70-bed secondary health care centre.

• College of Nursing Community Health (CONCH) which organizes exhibitions, street plays, health camps to make people aware  about their health and also implements Government health schemes for benefit of local population.

• Low Cost Effective Care Unit (LCECU) which is involved with rehabilitation and cost effective health care.

Health workers, Public health teams and socio-development worksrs serve tribal and rural people in areas in and around Kaniyambadi Block with 82 villages, Jawadhi Hills with 120 villages, Kansalpet, Saidapet, Sreenivasanagar, and Kagithapattarai.

Accommodation in CMC, Vellore

The CMC Annexe (in CMC Campus), provides accommodation for patients and relatives who have to stay here for a long duration for treatment. These rooms come with double beds and attached toilet and bathroom. To get accommodation, you should contact CMC Annexe Manager 6 weeks in advance. For very poor patients accommodation at nominal costs is provided in the Chatram at CMC.

Ambulance Facility in CMC, Vellore

Ambulance facility is provided to all patients. Only one relative is allowed (ID wrist band is provided) with each patient in OPD and in-patient areas to avoid overcrowding. Wheel Chairs and Stretchers are available near Centenary Block (ISSCC Building) and at Main Reception.

The Sub Post Office is situated in the main campus and provides regular postal services. Patients can use their own mobile phones in the hospital.
